COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Language and English Literature degree offers an integrated study of literature and the English language, allowing students to explore both the historical and structural aspects of the language alongside a broad range of literary texts. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules such as Reading Literature, English Word and Sentence Structure, The Sounds of Language, and History and Varieties of English, while optional units allow them to explore medieval literature, literary theory, and linguistic evidence. In the second year, students deepen their engagement with literature through modules on Chaucer, Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, and thematic studies in gender, sexuality, identity, and nation, while also having the opportunity to practice creative writing in fiction and poetry and study Old English texts. The third year focuses on advanced topics and independent scholarship, including modules on American literature and culture, climate change and cultural conflicts, and James Baldwin in context, alongside options for long essays and creative writing projects. Across the degree, students acquire skills in critical analysis, textual interpretation, linguistic investigation, and creative expression, equipping them for careers in writing, publishing, education, media, and cultural sectors, as well as preparing them for further research in English language and literature.
