COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Drama and Film Studies program provides a comprehensive exploration of theatre, film, and screen media, combining both theoretical and practical approaches. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as the Art of Film, Introduction to Theatre and Performance Studies, and Theatre and Performance Histories, while optional modules like Performance Practices, Early Film Histories, and World Cinema allow for early specialization and creative exploration. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of contemporary and historical developments in theatre and screen, studying modules such as Contemporary British Cinema, Theatres of Modernity, Black on Screen, and Post-Thatcher British Theatre, alongside practical courses in devising for performance, documentary filmmaking, and playmaking. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore additional screen and theatre contexts, including Performing America and God at the Movies, enabling students to integrate theory with creative practice. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced optional modules, including Horror Film, Socially Engaged Theatre, and the study of prison-based performance, culminating in a dissertation that encourages independent research and critical inquiry. This program equips students with transferable analytical, creative, and practical skills applicable to careers in theatre, film, television, media production, and the broader cultural and creative industries, while fostering critical engagement with both historical and contemporary performance and screen practices.
