COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Classics course offers a rich and diverse curriculum that explores the history, literature, and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, with opportunities to study related subjects such as Egyptology and archaeology. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational topics including Greek and Roman history, epic literature such as Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, and the broader cultural and political contexts of ancient civilizations. Students can also begin studying ancient languages through intensive Greek or Latin modules or explore Egyptian hieroglyphs. The second year deepens understanding of classical societies through units on figures like Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, and Greek politics, alongside thematic courses such as utopian thinking in antiquity and ancient Egyptian literature. There are also options to continue language studies at various levels. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation, allowing them to conduct independent research in their chosen area of interest. Advanced modules focus on Greek and Latin language mastery, social life and literature of ancient Egypt, and philosophical and cultural themes in classical thought. This combination of historical, literary, and linguistic study provides a comprehensive foundation in the ancient world’s intellectual and cultural legacy.
