COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Classical Studies program combines core and optional modules to provide a rich and flexible curriculum across three years. In the first year, students engage with foundational texts such as the Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, while also having the option to study ancient history, the Roman Republic and Empire, the culture of cities, Pharaonic Egypt, and classical languages including Greek, Latin, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. This introductory year balances literary, historical, and linguistic studies, allowing students to build a strong understanding of classical civilizations. In the second year, students can further explore key historical figures and periods, including Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire, as well as classical politics, archaeology, social life in Ancient Egypt, and ancient literature. Language options continue with intensive Greek and Latin, alongside Egyptian hieroglyphs, providing pathways for students to develop advanced reading and translation skills. The third year emphasizes independent research through a dissertation on classics, ancient history, archaeology, or Egyptology, while students can continue their study of Greek, Latin, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Additional options include advanced language courses and thematic studies such as utopian thinking in the ancient world. This structure allows students to combine literary, historical, linguistic, and archaeological perspectives, preparing them for further study or careers requiring analytical, research, and cultural expertise.
