COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Art History and History program offers a broad and interdisciplinary approach to understanding visual and historical cultures, combining rigorous art historical study with historical analysis. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge through core modules exploring art from the Ice Age to the Baroque period and from Rococo to contemporary works, alongside practical historical study. Optional modules in American history, Greek and Roman history, and classical literature allow students to explore additional areas of interest and develop analytical and research skills. The second year deepens this knowledge through modules in art theory, European art history field trips, and specialised historical studies, while optional units examine topics such as the Roman Empire, classical Greece, Weimar culture, British art and the environment, art markets, and late medieval Italy. Students are encouraged to integrate historical and art historical perspectives and develop critical thinking skills. In the third year, students have the opportunity to specialise further and undertake independent research through the History of Art dissertation and other options covering subjects such as Victorian art and science, Renaissance clothing, art and ecology, digital art, contemporary art, Picasso, and architecture. Graduates gain strong analytical, research, and interpretive skills, equipping them for careers in arts, heritage, museums, cultural institutions, publishing, and related professional fields.
