COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Art History and English Literature program combines the study of visual culture with literary analysis, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of artistic and textual traditions. In the first year, students build a foundational knowledge through core modules such as Reading Literature, Ice Age to Baroque: Artworks in History, and Rococo to Now: Artworks in History, alongside optional courses exploring medieval mapping, theory, literature in historical context, and art spaces. Art History tutorials support the development of analytical and research skills, fostering engagement with artworks and cultural texts. In the second year, students deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge through modules including Art in Theory and a European Art History Fieldtrip, while English Literature options explore creative writing, Chaucer, Shakespeare, gender and sexuality, identity, and nation. These modules enhance critical thinking, interpretive skills, and cultural awareness. In the third year, students have the opportunity to specialise further through a wide range of optional modules, including contemporary American literature, cultural and environmental debates, creative writing, and long essay projects. The program encourages independent research and critical reflection, integrating historical, theoretical, and cultural perspectives. Graduates gain strong analytical, interpretive, and communication skills, equipping them for careers in arts, cultural institutions, publishing, research, and related professional fields.
