COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Architecture program at the Manchester School of Architecture provides a progressive three-year structure that combines design, theory, technology, and professional practice. In Year 1, students develop foundational skills in space-making, material expression, and research, supported by technological and historical contexts. Core modules such as Design 1: Thinking by Making, Architectural Context, Design 2: Shaping Concepts, and Architectural Production introduce architectural design through practical projects, drawing, model-making, and other media, while exploring global architectural histories, sociopolitical contexts, and participatory design. Year 2 deepens design knowledge and integrates urban theory, sustainability, and technological awareness. Modules including Design 3: Transforming Places, Architectural Integration, Design 4: Activating Places, and Architectural Ecosystems guide students to engage with complex urban sites, ethical design, and climate-responsive technologies, while developing holistic approaches to the built environment. In Year 3, students gain autonomy to define their theoretical position and develop a personal design project within the atelier system. Design 5: Strategy, Architectural Positions, and Design 6: Resolution allow students to synthesize previous learning, demonstrate social engagement, integrate spatial, structural, and construction skills, and respond to contemporary issues. The program emphasizes critical thinking, professional preparedness, and innovation, preparing graduates to confidently enter the architectural profession and contribute to diverse and sustainable design solutions.
