COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Archaeology program provides students with a solid foundation in archaeological theory, methods, and practice while allowing opportunities to specialise in particular periods or themes. In the first year, students develop essential skills through core modules such as Discoveries and Discoverers: Sights and Sites and Doing Archaeology 1, while optional modules enable exploration of ancient history, Egyptian culture, Greek history, and broader arts and historical contexts. This combination fosters both practical and contextual understanding of the discipline. In the second year, students build on this foundation with mandatory modules including Thinking Archaeology, Artefacts and Interpretation, and Doing Archaeology 2, alongside digital data literacy skills. Optional modules allow in-depth study of classical Greece, Rome, Alexander the Great, and ancient Egyptian society and literature, as well as thematic explorations such as utopian thinking in the ancient world. The third year focuses on independent research through the mandatory dissertation in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Egyptology, while optional modules enable further specialisation in artefacts, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Minoan civilisation, Athens and Attica, burial practices, and Roman military frontiers. Across the three years, the program combines hands-on fieldwork, laboratory experience, and theoretical study, equipping graduates with practical skills, critical thinking, and analytical expertise, preparing them for careers in heritage, museums, cultural resource management, or further postgraduate research.
