COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Archaeology and Anthropology program provides an integrated study of past and present human societies, combining archaeological investigation with anthropological theory to explore cultural diversity, social structures, and material culture. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Discoveries and Discoverers, Doing Archaeology, and Key Ideas in Social Anthropology, while developing skills in ethnographic reading and understanding global cultural diversity. Optional modules allow exploration of ancient history, climate change, and regional cultural studies. The second year builds on these skills with advanced modules including Thinking Archaeology, Doing Archaeology 2, and Materiality and Representation, offering deeper insight into social life in ancient Egypt and complex civilizations like Minoan Crete, alongside optional studies in artefacts, Roman women, and burial practices. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through a dissertation or optional research projects, while engaging with topics such as the anthropology of health and wellbeing, development and humanitarianism, migration, and borders. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through excavation and fieldwork, enabling students to connect theoretical concepts with practical application. By combining laboratory resources, fieldwork opportunities, and interdisciplinary study, graduates develop analytical, practical, and interpretive skills, preparing them for careers in heritage, research, museums, cultural management, and postgraduate study.
