COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Arabic and French program combines intensive language study with cultural, historical, and political exploration of the Arab world and France. In the first year, students build foundational skills through mandatory modules such as Identity in Modern France, History and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa, and Arabic Language 1 and 2, while optional modules include French Cultural Studies, French Language 1 to 3, and the History and Sociopolitics of Palestine/Israel. This combination allows students to develop linguistic competence alongside a contextual understanding of the regions where these languages are spoken. In the second year, students continue to advance their Arabic proficiency through mandatory modules Arabic Language 3 and 4, and have opportunities to enhance their French skills with optional modules including Art in France, literary studies such as Temptations of the Tragic, Media, Performance, and Digital Culture, Stardom in France, and French Language 4 and 5. Additional optional modules such as Pragmatics: Meaning, Context, and Interaction, and Introduction to Postcolonial Arab World Literature allow students to explore language in context, literature, and media. Across all years, the program develops advanced reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in both languages while fostering cultural awareness, critical thinking, and research skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in translation, international relations, diplomacy, media, education, and global business, or for further postgraduate study in languages, area studies, or related fields.
