COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History program offers a three-year curriculum that combines the study of Greek and Roman history with language learning, archaeology, and Egyptology. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge through mandatory modules such as Constructing Archaic Greek History, From Republic to Empire: Introduction to Roman History, Society and Culture 218-31B, and Cities and Citizens. Optional modules allow exploration of subjects such as The Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, Doing Archaeology, Introduction to the History and Culture of Pharaonic Egypt, Intensive Greek, and Egyptian Hieroglyphs. The second year builds on this foundation with core modules like The Roman Empire 31 BC – AD 313: Rome’s Golden Age and Politics and Society in Classical Greece, while optional modules provide opportunities to study Alexander the Great, social life and literature in Ancient Egypt, archaeological theory, utopian thinking in the ancient world, and intensive Latin and Greek. In the third year, students complete a dissertation in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, or Egyptology, allowing independent research and in-depth study. Optional modules enable advanced language study in Greek and Latin, exploration of Egyptian social life and literature, and further engagement with cultural and philosophical themes such as utopian thinking. Across all years, the program develops analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for careers in academia, heritage, archaeology, education, or related fields, as well as for postgraduate study in classical and historical disciplines.
