COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History and Archaeology program provides a comprehensive study of the ancient world, integrating historical knowledge with practical archaeological experience. In the first year, students build foundational understanding through core modules such as Constructing Archaic Greek History, From Republic to Empire, and Doing Archaeology 1, while optional modules like The Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphs allow exploration of literature, culture, and language. The second year advances this knowledge with mandatory modules including The Roman Empire, Politics and Society in Classical Greece, Thinking Archaeology, and Doing Archaeology 2, which develop critical skills in historical interpretation, archaeological practice, and research methods. Optional modules such as Social Life in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Egyptian Literature, and The Emergence of Civilisation provide opportunities for deeper engagement with specific cultures and topics. In the third year, students undertake the mandatory dissertation in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, and Egyptology, synthesising research and practical skills acquired across the degree. Additional optional modules, including Artefacts and Interpretation, Athens and Attica, and Dealing with the Dead, allow specialization and hands-on engagement with archaeological evidence, material culture, and historical analysis. Overall, the program equips students with interdisciplinary expertise, combining historical study, archaeology, and ancient languages, preparing them for careers in research, heritage, museum curation, and further postgraduate study.
