The University of Manchester is a leading public research university located on Oxford Road, south of Manchester City Centre in England. It is one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious institutions and a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. The present university was established in 2004 through the merger of two historic institutions — the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester — continuing a long tradition of academic excellence dating back to 1824. The university traces its origins to the founding of the Manchester Mechanics’ Institution, created to provide working people with access to scientific education during the Industrial Revolution. Owens College, founded in 1851, later became part of the Victoria University in 1880, and by the early 20th century, Manchester had established itself as one of the most important centres of higher learning in Britain.Throughout its history, the university has been associated with major scientific discoveries and notable achievements. It is where Ernest Rutherford first split the atom and where the world’s first stored-program computer was developed. The institution is home to 26 Nobel laureates, reflecting its outstanding contributions to research across disciplines. Renowned figures such as Alan Turing, Niels Bohr, and Andre Geim have all contributed to its legacy.
