COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the full-time MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice, students study a combination of compulsory and optional modules designed to develop critical, analytical, and research-based understanding of crime, power, and social justice. Core modules include Criminology, Harms and Power, which explores how harm is defined, produced, and regulated within society, and Crime and Criminal Justice, providing an overview of criminal justice systems and processes. Research Methods develops essential skills in qualitative and quantitative research, preparing students for independent study, while Transforming Social Policy examines the role of policy in addressing crime, inequality, and social change. Students can choose from a range of optional modules, including Identity, Diversity and Human Rights, Desistance and the Carceral State, Criminology at the Margins, and Resistance, Activism and the State, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests within criminology and criminal justice. The program culminates in a substantial 60-credit capstone module, where students complete either a traditional Dissertation or a Digital Coproduction and Rehabilitation Project. This final component enables students to apply theoretical knowledge and research skills to real-world issues, producing meaningful work that supports future academic, professional, or policy-focused career pathways.
