The MSc Petroleum Engineering with Advanced Practice programme combines advanced technical education with practical industry experience to prepare graduates for careers in the petroleum, geoenergy, CCUS, and hydrogen sectors. A key component of the programme is the Advanced Practice module, which provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience through vocational internships with external organisations, research and development placements on campus, or employer-led projects. Students receive preparatory training and ongoing support from academic supervisors throughout their placements and complete a reflective report to evaluate their learning experience. The Engineering Research Project enables students to undertake independent investigations into sustainability or clean energy challenges, applying advanced research methods and technical analysis to develop practical solutions for industry-related problems. The Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production Engineering module develops a detailed understanding of exploration techniques, drilling operations, well completion processes, oil and gas production systems, and surface processing facilities used in hydrocarbon extraction and treatment. Petroleum Chemistry focuses on the properties and behaviour of crude oil and reservoir fluids, including phase behaviour, pressure-volume-temperature relationships, corrosion mechanisms, and reservoir fluid modelling using industry-standard simulation software. Through Petroleum Economics and Simulation, students study asset valuation, project economics, reservoir simulation technologies, and integrated reservoir management strategies to support effective decision-making in petroleum operations. Petroleum Reservoir Engineering introduces reservoir characteristics, fluid flow through porous media, geological formations, well testing, and logging interpretation techniques that are essential for reservoir evaluation and production planning. The Quality, Health, Safety and Environment module develops knowledge of risk management, safety systems, quality assurance, environmental legislation, and sustainable industry practices required in oil and gas organisations. Sustainability in Chemical Engineering further strengthens the programme by introducing environmental impact assessment, life cycle analysis, environmental management systems, renewable energy technologies, and clean engineering strategies designed to support the transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible energy industry.
