COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Mechanical Engineering programme offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines advanced engineering theory, practical application, and industry experience to prepare graduates for modern engineering careers. A key feature of the programme is the Advanced Practice module, which provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience through vocational placements with external organisations, research and development projects on campus, or employer-led internships. Students receive preparatory training, academic supervision, and ongoing support throughout their placement, helping them enhance their employability and professional development. The academic modules begin with CAD/CAM and Product Developments, where students explore modern product development techniques, rapid prototyping technologies, collaborative engineering methods, and three-dimensional modelling tools designed to reduce manufacturing lead times and accelerate innovation. Through the Engineering Research Project, students undertake independent investigations into sustainability or clean energy challenges, applying advanced research methodologies and technical analysis to produce practical and industry-focused solutions. The Finite Element Methods module develops computational analysis skills through the use of commercial software packages and real engineering case studies to solve complex design and manufacturing problems. Machine Design provides an in-depth understanding of advanced design principles, stress analysis, mechanical drives, machine elements, and experimental stress analysis while encouraging consideration of resource efficiency and environmental impact in engineering decisions. The Supply Chain Management module introduces important industrial concepts including benchmarking, key performance indicators, total quality management, six sigma, total productive maintenance, and supply chain integration to improve organisational performance and competitiveness. Sustainability is integrated throughout the programme through the dedicated sustainability module, which focuses on environmental assessment, systems thinking, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development policies. Students can also choose an optional module in either Continuum Mechanics, which explores the behaviour of fluids and solids in engineering applications, or Manufacturing Systems, which examines automation, flexible production systems, and computer-integrated manufacturing technologies used in modern industry.
