COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Instrumentation and Control Engineering programme provides a comprehensive and industry-focused curriculum that combines advanced technical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for careers in modern engineering industries. A key feature of the programme is the Advanced Practice module, which offers students the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience through vocational internships with external organisations, research or development internships on campus, or employer-led projects. Students receive preparation and support in securing suitable placements and are guided by an academic supervisor throughout their internship experience. The academic curriculum includes Data Acquisition and Signal Processing, where students study sampling methods, digital signal analysis, and modern industrial measurement technologies using real-world applications and industrial software tools. In Digital Control Design and Implementation, students develop expertise in digital circuit analysis, VHDL modelling, rapid prototyping, and control system design using modern design frameworks and simulation technologies. The Electronic Signal Conditioning module focuses on precision measurement systems and the techniques required to convert sensor outputs into signals suitable for digital processing. Through the Engineering Research Project, students undertake independent research addressing sustainability or clean energy challenges while applying advanced analytical and research methods to produce industry-relevant solutions. The Identification and Model Predictive Control module introduces system identification techniques and their application in adaptive and model-based control systems, supported by practical work using MATLAB and Simulink. Students also study Robust Control Systems, exploring Quantitative Feedback Theory and alternative methods such as expert systems and fuzzy logic to solve complex engineering control problems under uncertain conditions. The programme is further strengthened by a Sustainability module that examines environmental impact, climate change mitigation, systems thinking, and sustainable development policies, ensuring graduates are equipped to contribute to the future of sustainable engineering and technological innovation.
