COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc Forensic Science with Advanced Practice programme combines advanced scientific training with practical professional experience to prepare students for careers in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related fields. A key component of the course is the Advanced Research Project, where students undertake an independent and hypothesis-driven investigation using laboratory, computational, or database research methods to solve complex forensic problems while developing advanced skills in research, critical analysis, innovation, and scientific communication. The Advanced and Applied Practice module further enhances employability through a 12-week internship requiring at least 400 hours of professional activity. Students may participate in research and development projects, employer-led placements, virtual internships, or vocational placements, all supported by academic supervisors and workplace mentors who provide guidance throughout the experience. The Analytical Techniques in Heritage Crime module explores the protection of cultural heritage assets such as artworks, monuments, and historic buildings, while examining legislation, ethical considerations, and scientific technologies used to prevent and investigate heritage crime. Criminal Justice and the Forensic Practitioner develops knowledge of the criminal justice system, evidence admissibility, human rights, and expert witness responsibilities, with students gaining practical experience in presenting forensic evidence within simulated courtroom environments. Through Forensic Biology, students learn to identify, analyse, and interpret biological evidence including DNA, body fluids, hairs, and fibres used in criminal investigations. The Forensic Chemistry module focuses on the scientific examination of physical evidence such as paint, glass, fibres, and drugs using modern analytical instrumentation and statistical techniques. Forensic Investigative Strategy provides practical experience in crime scene science, evidence recovery, contamination prevention, and forensic examination procedures through realistic crime scene exercises. Human Remains and Identification develops specialist expertise in skeletal analysis, biological profiling, bioarchaeology, and methods used to identify missing or unknown individuals. Together, these modules provide graduates with the scientific knowledge, technical competence, and investigative skills required to succeed in modern forensic science and criminal justice environments.
