COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Electrical Power and Energy Systems (with Advanced Practice) programme combines advanced technical education in modern power systems with valuable practical experience through an additional advanced practice semester. The Advanced Practice module provides opportunities for vocational internships with external organisations, research and development placements within the university, or employer-led projects on campus. Students receive guidance and support from an academic supervisor throughout the placement and complete a reflective report assessed on a pass or fail basis. The Engineering Research Project allows students to investigate a real-world sustainability or clean energy challenge, applying advanced research methods, technical analysis and critical evaluation to produce industry-relevant outcomes. The Future Energy Demand module examines global and regional energy trends, electrification, smart energy systems and the challenges associated with balancing energy generation and demand in low-carbon economies. Microgrids focuses on the planning, modelling and operation of localised energy networks that integrate renewable generation, energy storage and demand-side management technologies. Students also study Power Conversion for Energy Systems, gaining detailed knowledge of power electronic converters used in electricity transmission, renewable integration and energy storage applications, including HVDC transmission and reactive power compensation technologies. The Renewable Energy Generation module explores major renewable technologies such as solar, wind and hydro power together with energy storage solutions and grid integration methods. Smart Grids develops understanding of intelligent electricity networks, automation, control systems and advanced transmission technologies that support modern energy infrastructure. The Sustainability module introduces environmental impact assessment, climate change mitigation strategies, systems thinking and sustainable engineering practices. Together, these modules prepare graduates for careers in electrical power engineering, renewable energy, smart grid development, energy management and sustainable infrastructure industries worldwide while enhancing employability through practical industry or research experience.
