COURSE CURRICULUM

This Data Science programme provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in data analytics, machine learning, business intelligence, and data visualisation to prepare them for careers in the rapidly growing data industry. The course develops expertise in Big Data and Business Intelligence, enabling students to design and implement databases, analytics systems, and large-scale data management solutions while exploring technologies such as data warehouses, legacy data integration, and business intelligence applications for real-world organisations. Through the Computing Masters Project, students undertake an independent research or industry-based investigation, producing substantial outputs such as software tools, analytical applications, or research findings while developing strong project management, critical thinking, and evaluation skills. The programme includes specialist modules in Data Visualisation and Interactive Visualisation, where students learn to present complex information through traditional and modern charting methods, interactive graphics, and web-based technologies such as D3.js to reveal trends and patterns in multidimensional datasets. Machine Learning develops knowledge of predictive modelling, algorithms, probability, and statistical methods used to create intelligent systems capable of learning from data and adapting to new situations. Research Methods prepares students for academic and professional investigations by developing expertise in research design, evidence generation, evaluation techniques, and research ethics, while Statistical Methods for Data Analytics strengthens understanding of regression, correlation, normalisation, and quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques required for advanced analytical work. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an advanced practice internship through either a vocational placement within industry or a research internship within the University, allowing them to gain valuable professional experience, enhance employability, and strengthen research capabilities. Graduates are well prepared for careers in data science, business analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, business intelligence, and research across a wide range of industries and sectors.
