COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc Cyber Security programme provides students with advanced technical knowledge, practical experience, and research skills required to protect modern organisations from evolving cyber threats and security challenges. A major component of the course is the Computing Masters Project, where students undertake independent research or industry-focused investigations to develop significant outputs such as software tools, security systems, applications, or research findings while strengthening their analytical, research, and project management abilities. The Cyber Risk and Vulnerability Management module develops expertise in cyber risk assessment, security frameworks, vulnerability identification, and the use of industry-standard tools and techniques to manage and reduce security risks. Through Ethical Hacking Techniques, students gain practical experience in penetration testing, attack models, vulnerability analysis, and offensive and defensive security strategies while exploring the growing use of artificial intelligence in cyber security operations. The Hacking the Human module focuses on social engineering and human behaviour, examining how attackers exploit individuals to gain access to systems and developing strategies to improve awareness and organisational resilience. IT Ethics and Law provides an understanding of legal and ethical responsibilities within the technology sector, covering intellectual property rights, privacy, data protection, cybercrime legislation, contracts, and liability issues. Students also study Mobile Systems and Cyber Security, gaining knowledge of mobile device technologies, communication systems, networking protocols, data compression methods, and security controls used in smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Network and Systems Security develops expertise in cryptography, authentication protocols, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, wireless security, penetration testing, access control mechanisms, and protection against network attacks. The programme also offers advanced practice opportunities through vocational or research internships, allowing students to gain valuable professional experience or participate in academic research projects. These opportunities enhance employability, strengthen practical skills, and prepare graduates for careers in cyber security analysis, ethical hacking, risk management, information assurance, digital forensics, and network security across a wide range of industries.
