COURSE CURRICULUM
This postgraduate programme in crime investigation and criminology combines academic study, practical experience and advanced research skills to prepare students for careers within policing, criminal justice, law enforcement and related professional sectors. The Applied or Advanced Practice in Social Sciences, Humanities and Law module provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience by securing and completing a work placement with support from the course team. Through this experience, students apply theoretical knowledge to practical projects while developing professional skills, industry awareness and employability. The Dissertation module develops advanced research and evaluation abilities by requiring students to integrate, synthesise and critically assess criminological theories, concepts and research methodologies while producing an independent empirical or theoretical study on a criminological topic of their choice. Investigation of Organised Crime examines the nature, structure and investigation of organised criminal activity using academic literature and specialist expertise from professionals involved in organised crime investigations. Students critically analyse investigative approaches used by police services in the United Kingdom and internationally while considering different governmental responses to organised crime. Legal Aspects of Investigating Crime develops understanding of the English legal system, sources of law and the legal framework that governs criminal investigations and prosecution processes. Students examine how legislation and legal principles influence investigative practice within the criminal justice system. Social Research Methods provides advanced knowledge of research methodologies, data collection and analysis techniques while exploring the philosophical foundations of social research and the relationship between theory, methods and evidence. Students also develop an understanding of ethical and practical issues involved in designing and conducting research. The Practice of Major Crime Investigation module, delivered online, focuses on the management, coordination and supervision of major crime investigations while introducing nationally recognised investigative strategies and best practice guidelines that support ethical, efficient and legally compliant investigations. Together, these modules equip graduates with advanced investigative expertise, legal understanding, research capabilities and professional skills that support careers in policing, intelligence, public policy, criminology and academic research.
