COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Civil and Structural Engineering (with Advanced Practice) programme combines advanced engineering knowledge with practical industry experience through an additional internship or research placement semester. The course develops expertise in Advanced Geotechnics, where students study modern soil analysis techniques, geotechnical design methods and the role of ground engineering in construction projects. Advanced Structural Analysis with Dynamics provides knowledge of static and dynamic structural behaviour, enabling students to analyse structures subjected to complex loading conditions including earthquakes and vibration effects. Advanced Structural Design further develops professional design capabilities by introducing advanced structural engineering methods used to solve real-world engineering problems. The Advanced Project Planning and Visualisation module focuses on project management principles, scheduling techniques and modern technologies such as 4D visualisation and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Students also study Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes, exploring treatment technologies and the challenges associated with sustainable water management and the water-energy nexus. The Sustainability module develops understanding of environmental impact assessment, climate change mitigation and sustainable engineering practices. An Engineering Research Project allows students to undertake independent research into a real-world engineering, sustainability or clean energy challenge while developing advanced analytical and research skills. The Advanced Practice module provides opportunities for vocational internships with external organisations, employer-led projects or research placements within the university. Students receive academic supervision throughout the placement and complete a reflective report based on their experience. This combination of technical expertise, research capability and practical experience prepares graduates for professional engineering careers and progression towards Chartered Engineer status.
