The MSc Chemical Engineering (with Advanced Practice) course provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines advanced technical knowledge with valuable industrial or research experience. The Advanced Chemical Engineering Design module develops expertise in the use of industry-standard modelling and simulation software for the design of complex chemical engineering processes and complete chemical plants, while also introducing business, commercial and regulatory considerations involved in process development. Advanced Fluid Dynamics strengthens understanding of computational fluid dynamics, multiphase flow, thermodynamics and fluid behaviour in engineering systems through lectures, laboratories and problem-solving activities using CFD software tools. The Advanced Practice module provides a semester-long opportunity to gain real-world experience through vocational internships with external organisations, research or development placements within the university or employer-led projects, with academic supervision and support provided throughout the placement period. The Electrochemical Principles module focuses on electrochemical systems and technologies including electrolysis, batteries and fuel cells while exploring kinetics, thermodynamics, mass transfer and diffusion processes relevant to modern energy applications. Through the Engineering Research Project, students investigate real sustainability or clean energy challenges using advanced research methods and technical analysis to deliver industry-relevant solutions. Process Improvement and Optimisation develops expertise in improving industrial efficiency through optimisation techniques, catalyst selection, advanced reactors and process redesign methods to create more competitive and sustainable manufacturing systems. The Quality, Health, Safety and Environment module provides an understanding of quality management, process safety, hazard identification, risk management and environmental compliance within process industries, particularly oil and gas operations, while introducing Total Quality Management and Environmental Impact Assessment principles. Sustainability in Chemical Engineering focuses on life cycle assessment, environmental management systems, renewable energy technologies and clean engineering solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable industrial development. Together, these modules prepare graduates for careers in chemical processing, energy, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, hydrogen technologies, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing industries while strengthening their professional and research capabilities through practical experience.
