COURSE CURRICULUM
The programme provides an advanced and research-focused study of biomedical sciences, combining specialist knowledge of disease mechanisms, diagnostics, cancer biology, genomics, and modern laboratory technologies. Students develop a deep understanding of the biological processes behind diseases and explore innovative approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and personalised medicine. The Advanced Biological Aspects of Diseases module examines current research into conditions such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, infectious diseases, and neurological disorders while developing skills in scientific communication, critical analysis, and evaluation of research literature. The course includes an Advanced Practice in Health and Life Sciences internship, allowing students to gain valuable professional experience through research or development projects and improve employability. Through Analytical Techniques, students gain practical expertise in advanced laboratory methods including chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, alongside data analysis skills. Cancer Diagnostics and Therapeutics explores modern cancer detection methods, biomarkers, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer genomics, and personalised treatment strategies. Clinical Biochemistry and Diagnostic Techniques develops knowledge of analysing biological samples for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and therapeutic applications. Students also study Genomics and Bioinformatics, gaining expertise in next-generation sequencing, genome editing, pharmacogenomics, personalised medicine, and ethical considerations in genomic research. The Life Science Research Project enables students to conduct an independent investigation within a research team, applying advanced laboratory, computational, and analytical methods to solve scientific problems. Pathobiology of Cancer focuses on the molecular mechanisms of tumour development, cancer progression, immune interactions, metastasis, treatment resistance, and the application of research knowledge in personalised cancer medicine. Delivered at Teesside University’s state-of-the-art Bios facility and National Horizons Centre, the programme provides access to advanced research technologies including genomic, proteomic, metabolomic analysis, bioinformatics modelling, biopharmaceutical research, protein studies, and advanced cellular imaging. Graduates develop strong research, laboratory, analytical, and problem-solving skills suitable for careers in biomedical research, clinical laboratories, biotechnology industries, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organisations, and further PhD study.
