The MSc Biotechnology with Advanced Practice programme provides students with advanced knowledge and practical expertise in biotechnology, bioprocessing, biopharmaceutical production, and life science research. The course focuses on developing the skills required for careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries by combining scientific theory, laboratory techniques, research methods, and industry-focused experience. Students explore advanced downstream and upstream bioprocessing, gaining an understanding of the complete biomanufacturing process, from biological production to purification of advanced therapies and biologics. The Advanced Downstream Bioprocessing module covers purification techniques such as filtration, chromatography, centrifugation, and separation methods used to remove contaminants and produce high-quality biological products. Advanced Upstream Bioprocessing focuses on developing efficient production systems, understanding biological processes, designing experiments, selecting suitable hosts, and exploring gene therapy approaches, vectors, and delivery technologies. The Biopharmaceuticals: From Concept to Product module introduces students to drug development processes, including target selection, cell line development, monoclonal antibody production, and advanced gene therapy technologies. Students also develop expertise in Analytical Techniques, learning modern methods such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy, genomic analysis, proteomics, and metabolomics while gaining skills in data handling and interpretation. The Fermentation Microbiology module explores the use of microorganisms as biological factories for producing valuable products, including food ingredients and advanced therapeutic compounds. Through Genomics and Bioinformatics, students study next-generation sequencing, genome editing, personalised medicine, pharmacogenomics, and ethical challenges in modern biotechnology. The Life Science Research Project allows students to undertake an independent research project within areas such as microbiology, molecular biology, protein science, biotechnology, and bioengineering while working with research-active supervisors. The Advanced Practice module provides an internship opportunity, allowing students to gain professional experience, improve employability, and apply academic knowledge in real-world research or development environments. Overall, the programme equips graduates with advanced technical skills, research abilities, and industry knowledge needed for careers in biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical organisations, healthcare research, and further academic study.
