COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied Cyber Security with Advanced Practice programme combines advanced cybersecurity education with valuable practical experience through an additional internship semester. The course begins with Cyber Security and Network Foundations, where students learn the core principles of computer networking, cybersecurity, mobile connectivity, and modern network design. Network and Systems Security develops expertise in cryptography, authentication protocols, digital signatures, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, penetration testing, access control mechanisms, and methods for defending against cyber attacks. Through Cyber Risk and Vulnerability Management, students gain practical knowledge of identifying, analysing, and mitigating security risks and vulnerabilities using industry-standard frameworks, tools, and techniques. The Hacking the Human module focuses on social engineering attacks and human-related security threats, helping students understand how cyber criminals exploit human behaviour and how organisations can reduce these risks through awareness and mitigation strategies. IT Ethics and Law explores important legal and ethical issues within information technology, including privacy legislation, intellectual property rights, computer crime, contracts, liability, and data protection regulations. The Computing Masters Project provides an opportunity to undertake an extensive independent research or industry-based project, allowing students to apply their knowledge to solve complex cybersecurity challenges through the development of innovative solutions, software tools, or research outputs. The Advanced Practice component adds an additional semester dedicated to gaining real-world experience through vocational internships with external organisations, employer-led projects, or university-based research internships. Throughout the internship, students receive support from an academic supervisor and complete a reflective report based on their experience. This combination of technical expertise, research capability, and practical experience prepares graduates for senior roles in cybersecurity and information security management.
