COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Aerospace Engineering (with Advanced Practice) curriculum combines advanced aerospace engineering knowledge with practical industry experience to prepare graduates for careers in aviation, defence and space industries. The Advanced Aerospace Structures module develops expertise in aircraft structural analysis, covering torsion, shear flow, stress distribution and semi-monocoque structures commonly used in aircraft design, while emphasising hand calculations to support the interpretation of finite element analysis results. Advanced Fluid Dynamics explores computational fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, multiphase flow and aerodynamic behaviour in both subsonic and supersonic flight, including topics such as shock waves, nozzles, diffusers and boundary layer interactions. The Engineering Research Project enables students to investigate real-world sustainability or clean energy challenges through independent research and technical analysis. Finite Element Methods provides practical experience using commercial engineering software to analyse and solve design and manufacturing problems. Space Mission Analysis and Trajectory Design introduces orbital mechanics, mission planning, orbit transfer manoeuvres, gravity assists and interplanetary mission design, including missions involving Lagrange points and deep-space exploration. Supply Chain Management develops understanding of quality management approaches such as Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), alongside manufacturing benchmarking and supply chain optimisation strategies. The Sustainability module focuses on environmental impact assessment, climate change mitigation and sustainable engineering practices. The Advanced Practice component takes place over one semester and provides valuable real-world experience through vocational internships with external organisations, research or development placements within the university or employer-led projects. Students receive academic and pastoral support from an assigned supervisor throughout the placement and complete a reflective report on a pass/fail basis. This additional practical experience strengthens employability, professional skills and industry readiness while complementing the technical expertise developed during the master's programme.
