The MSc Sustainable Engineering and Clean Energy programme offers a comprehensive and future-focused curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills required to support the global transition towards sustainable and low-carbon economies. Through the Engineering Research Project, students undertake independent investigations into real-world sustainability or clean energy challenges, applying advanced research methodologies and technical analysis to develop practical and industry-relevant solutions. The Future Energy Demand module explores global and regional energy consumption trends, energy modelling techniques, electrification, smart grids, and the challenges involved in balancing energy supply and demand within a low-carbon society. Students also examine Interactive Digital Factory Systems, gaining insight into Industry 4.0 technologies such as digital twins, automation, data-driven manufacturing, and intelligent production systems that improve efficiency and sustainability in industrial environments. The Renewable Energy Generation module provides detailed knowledge of renewable technologies including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and emerging energy systems, alongside topics such as energy storage, grid integration, and performance optimisation. Sustainability remains a central theme throughout the programme, with students exploring environmental impact assessments, climate change mitigation strategies, systems thinking, and policy frameworks that support sustainable development. In addition, the Zero Carbon Built Infrastructure module focuses on the design, construction, and operation of low-carbon and zero-carbon buildings and infrastructure, covering sustainable construction techniques, energy-efficient design, and building performance evaluation. Together, these modules prepare graduates to contribute effectively to net zero initiatives and pursue careers in renewable energy, sustainable engineering, smart manufacturing, and environmentally responsible infrastructure development.
