COURSE CURRICULUM

This master's programme in Strength and Conditioning provides advanced scientific knowledge and practical skills required to enhance athletic performance, support rehabilitation, and contribute effectively within high-performance sport environments. Students develop expertise in advanced testing, monitoring, and athlete profiling methods by exploring the use of physiological, biomechanical, and psychological data in performance assessment and return-to-sport decision making. The programme strengthens both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis skills, enabling students to interpret evidence and apply findings to professional practice. Practical coaching skills form a major component of the course, where students apply principles from physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and motor learning to strength and conditioning practice. Areas such as Olympic weightlifting, strength and power training, speed development, agility training, and plyometrics are explored alongside safe coaching techniques and contextual considerations. The course also emphasises reflective and ethical practice, encouraging students to critically evaluate their professional development while examining important issues such as inclusivity, ethical decision making, and responsible research practice. Students investigate the role of strength and conditioning in rehabilitation and return-to-sport processes, using evidence-based approaches and case studies to understand recovery strategies for different injuries and sporting situations. The programme also explores how strength and conditioning principles can be adapted for diverse populations, considering physiological, psychological, sociological, and individual differences when designing and delivering programmes. Another important area of study is the science of training programme design, where students examine the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological foundations of adaptation to different training methods and critically evaluate contemporary scientific evidence surrounding performance enhancement. The course concludes with an independent sport and exercise research project that allows students to investigate an area of personal interest under academic supervision and develop advanced research skills. An optional placement opportunity is also available, providing practical experience and supporting progression towards UK Strength and Conditioning Association accreditation and professional practice.
