COURSE CURRICULUM

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of criminology, criminal justice, and advanced social research methods, preparing them for careers in research, policy development, criminal justice organisations, and further academic study. Students explore the structure and operation of criminal justice systems by examining procedures, processes, power relationships, and political influences that shape the administration and delivery of justice. The programme investigates the work of criminal justice institutions and agencies within historical and contemporary contexts while considering developments at local, national, and international levels. Particular attention is given to the social construction of justice and the processes involved in prosecution, diversion, sentencing, and criminal justice decision-making. The course also introduces students to criminological theory, tracing the development of criminology from its origins to contemporary perspectives and examining how political, social, and economic conditions have influenced different theories over time. Alongside specialist criminological knowledge, students develop strong research skills through the study of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. Traditional and emerging research techniques are explored, enabling students to gather, analyse, interpret, and present data effectively. Students gain experience working with large datasets through resources such as the UK Data Service and learn about the strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations associated with different research approaches. The programme also develops expertise in research design by exploring the relationships between philosophy, theory, and methodology, while enhancing skills in formulating research questions, selecting suitable methods, and evaluating research concepts and findings. The course culminates in an independent dissertation project where students design and conduct original research under academic supervision, managing every stage of the process from topic selection and ethical approval to final submission. Graduates leave with specialist criminological knowledge and advanced research capabilities suitable for professional and academic careers.
