COURSE CURRICULUM

The programme offers an advanced and industry-focused curriculum that develops expertise in mechanical design, manufacturing technologies, product development, and sustainable engineering practices. Students begin by studying CAD/CAM and Product Developments, where they gain knowledge of modern product design techniques aimed at reducing development time and accelerating product delivery to market. The module covers rapid prototyping, collaborative product development, concurrent engineering strategies, and the use of three-dimensional modelling software, while encouraging critical evaluation of different design tools and their integration within manufacturing systems. Through the Engineering Research Project, students undertake independent research addressing sustainability or clean energy challenges, applying advanced research methods, technical analysis, and critical evaluation to develop practical and industry-relevant solutions. The Finite Element Methods module provides hands-on experience with commercial finite element software packages, enabling students to analyse and solve complex design and manufacturing problems using computational techniques and real-world case studies. In Machine Design, students develop an advanced understanding of mechanical design principles, stress analysis, mechanical drives, machine elements, and experimental stress analysis while considering resource conservation and environmental impact during the design process. Practical laboratory work, tutorials, and assignments support the application of theory to realistic engineering scenarios. The Supply Chain Management module introduces concepts such as benchmarking, key performance indicators, total quality management, six sigma, total productive maintenance, and supply chain integration, helping students understand how organisations can improve efficiency, quality, and competitive advantage. Sustainability is embedded throughout the programme through the dedicated sustainability module, which explores environmental impact assessment, climate change mitigation, systems thinking, and sustainable development policies. Students can further tailor their studies through optional modules such as Continuum Mechanics, which integrates the study of solids and fluids in industrial applications, or Manufacturing Systems, which examines automation, flexible manufacturing systems, and computer-integrated production technologies used in modern industry.
