The MSc Health Psychology course develops advanced knowledge and practical skills in applying psychological theories and research methods to improve health, wellbeing and healthcare services. The programme focuses on evidence-based practice, behaviour change, psychological interventions and research skills required for professional roles in health psychology and related healthcare fields. Students explore how psychological principles can be used to understand health behaviours, prevent illness, support patients and improve healthcare outcomes. The Applications of Health Psychology Research module develops students’ abilities in research design, systematic reviewing, research ethics, project management and evidence-based practice. Students complete an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisor, preparing a research proposal and presenting their final work in the format of a professional research article. Applications of Qualitative Methods in Psychology provides advanced skills in qualitative research approaches, allowing students to design, conduct and analyse qualitative studies. Students explore theoretical perspectives, data collection methods, interpretation techniques and the relationship between psychological theory and research practice. The Applied Quantitative Research Methods module develops advanced statistical and analytical skills, including effect size calculations, power analysis, confidence intervals, multiple regression, logistic regression, factor analysis, reliability analysis, mediation and moderation analysis. Health Psychology in Practice focuses on professional and clinical skills needed for health psychology practice. Students examine communication, leadership, collaborative working, professional development, psychological assessment and intervention design. They explore evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, stress management and motivational interviewing, learning how these interventions can support health improvement. The Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Issues in Health Psychology module examines the development of health psychology and its relationship with disciplines such as behavioural medicine and medical sociology. Students critically evaluate the biopsychosocial model, behaviour change techniques and current health challenges, including stress, pain and illness management. Overall, the course equips graduates with research expertise, practical intervention skills, communication abilities and critical thinking required for careers in health psychology, healthcare research, public health, wellbeing services and professional healthcare environments.
