COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc Forensic Science programme provides students with advanced scientific knowledge and practical expertise required to investigate crime using modern forensic methods and technologies. A central feature of the course is the Advanced Research Project, where students undertake an independent, hypothesis-driven investigation using laboratory, computational, or database research methodologies to address complex forensic problems while developing high-level research, analytical, and problem-solving skills under the guidance of academic supervisors and research teams. The Analytical Techniques in Heritage Crime module introduces students to the protection and investigation of cultural heritage assets, including historical buildings, sculptures, and artworks, while exploring legislation, ethical issues, and scientific technologies used to detect and prevent heritage crime. Criminal Justice and the Forensic Practitioner develops understanding of the legal framework surrounding forensic investigations, evidence admissibility, human rights, and expert witness responsibilities, with students gaining practical experience through simulated courtroom exercises and testimony delivery. The Forensic Biology module focuses on the recovery, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of biological evidence such as DNA, body fluids, hair, and fibres, providing students with essential skills required in modern forensic laboratories. Forensic Chemistry examines a broad range of physical evidence recovered from crime scenes, including glass, paint, fibres, and controlled substances, while developing expertise in analytical instrumentation and statistical interpretation of scientific results. Through the Forensic Investigative Strategy module, students gain practical experience in crime scene science, evidence continuity, contamination prevention, and forensic examination procedures, including evidence recovery exercises conducted within simulated crime scene environments. The Human Remains and Identification module develops specialist knowledge in the forensic examination of skeletal remains, biological profiling, bioarchaeology, and methods used to identify missing or unknown individuals while strengthening professional reporting and expert witness skills. Together, these modules provide graduates with the scientific competence, practical experience, and investigative expertise required for careers in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related scientific disciplines.
