COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc Forensic Psychology course provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills to understand the relationship between psychology, crime, criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system. The programme develops critical thinking, research ability and professional skills required to apply psychological theories in forensic settings. Students explore how psychological principles can support the understanding, investigation, assessment and management of offenders and victims while considering ethical responsibilities and professional standards. The course follows an applied approach, helping students understand the different stages of the criminal justice process and the psychological factors that influence offending, investigations and rehabilitation. The Applications of Qualitative Methods in Psychology module develops students’ ability to design, conduct and evaluate qualitative research, focusing on advanced research approaches used within applied psychology. Students learn how to collect, analyse and interpret qualitative data while understanding the relationship between theory and practice. Applied Quantitative Research Methods enhances students’ statistical and analytical skills through advanced research techniques, including regression analysis, factor analysis, reliability testing, mediation, moderation, confidence intervals and power analysis. The Forensic Psychology Project allows students to complete an independent research project on a specialist forensic psychology topic, strengthening their research, academic writing and analytical abilities. Professional Skills for Forensic Practitioners focuses on the role of psychologists in forensic environments, including psychological assessment, risk evaluation, intervention planning, offender profiling, consultancy and professional practice. Students examine theories of offending behaviour, personality disorders, cognitive assessment and rehabilitation strategies. The Psychology of Investigations and the Criminal Justice System explores how psychology contributes to criminal investigations by improving evidence collection, understanding witness and victim experiences, and supporting decision-making within justice settings. The course also provides practical experiences, including opportunities to participate in mock court activities and develop expert witness skills by presenting and defending professional opinions. Graduates develop transferable skills in research, communication, assessment, leadership and problem-solving, preparing them for careers in forensic psychology, criminal justice services, offender rehabilitation, research and related professional fields.
