COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Management at Teesside University is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme designed to prepare graduates for careers focused on sustainability, environmental protection and resource management. The course combines scientific, social, technological and regulatory aspects of environmental management, providing students with knowledge from biology, chemistry, ecology, geography, geology and social sciences. Located in the Tees Valley, an area at the forefront of environmental innovation and net zero initiatives, the university offers an ideal learning environment that combines industrial development with access to national parks, coastal ecosystems and protected landscapes. Core modules include Climate Change, which explores the causes, impacts and evidence of global climate change; Conservation, focusing on biodiversity protection, global change biology, invasive species and rewilding strategies; Environmental Management, covering environmental impact assessments, environmental auditing and ISO14000 standards; Global Energy Resources, examining fossil fuels, decarbonisation and renewable energy transitions; Global Water Resources, studying freshwater systems, water management and sustainability challenges; and Sustainability and Society, which investigates the relationship between society, environmental degradation and sustainable development. Students also complete an Advanced Research Project where they independently investigate a real environmental management issue and produce a dissertation and poster presentation. The programme develops practical research, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills needed to work with governments, environmental consultancies, industries, conservation organisations and regulatory bodies. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management, conservation, environmental policy, resource management and climate change adaptation and mitigation roles across the public and private sectors.
