COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Electrical Power Engineering programme develops advanced technical expertise in modern power systems, renewable energy technologies and sustainable energy solutions. The course begins with an Engineering Research Project where students undertake an independent investigation into a real-world sustainability or clean energy challenge, applying advanced research methods and technical analysis to develop industry-relevant solutions. The Future Energy Demand module examines global and regional energy consumption trends, electrification, energy modelling and the challenges of balancing electricity generation and demand within a low-carbon economy. Microgrids focuses on the planning, operation and optimisation of local energy networks that integrate renewable generation, energy storage systems and demand-side management technologies. Students learn to use mathematical models and specialist software to design and control microgrid systems effectively. The Power Conversion for Energy Systems module develops an in-depth understanding of power electronic converters and their applications in modern electrical networks, including HVDC transmission, reactive power compensation and renewable energy integration. Renewable Energy Generation introduces technologies such as solar, wind and hydro power, alongside energy storage systems and methods for improving system performance and grid compatibility. The Smart Grids module explores intelligent electricity networks, automation, control systems and emerging technologies designed to improve transmission and distribution efficiency while supporting future energy requirements. Students also study Sustainability, gaining knowledge of environmental impact assessment, climate change mitigation, systems thinking and policies supporting sustainable engineering development. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in electrical power systems, renewable energy, smart grid technologies, energy management and sustainable infrastructure development within the rapidly evolving global energy sector.
