COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diagnostic Radiography programme combines academic study with extensive clinical experience to prepare students for professional practice in modern healthcare environments. In the first year, Clinical Placement 1 introduces students to the role of the diagnostic radiographer and develops the knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours required for safe and effective clinical practice during a 35-week placement. Clinical Placement 2 builds on this experience by introducing more complex radiographic examinations, image evaluation, abnormality recognition, and the safe use of contrast media and pharmacology in imaging procedures. The Enhancing Professionalism, Leadership and Service Improvement Skills for the Future Ready Practitioner module develops understanding of healthcare policies, professional standards, leadership, service improvement, and reflective practice, supported through the creation of an electronic portfolio. Professional Practice and Mastery uses problem-based learning to explore ethical, professional, and patient management issues within radiographic practice while encouraging critical reflection and decision-making skills. The Radiographic Anatomy, Physics and Legislation module provides essential knowledge of anatomy, imaging physics, radiation safety regulations, and medical imaging technologies using simulation software and clinical skills laboratories to support practical learning. During the second year, Clinical Placement 3 further develops clinical competence through advanced image assessment, abnormality detection, preliminary clinical evaluation, and peripheral intravenous cannulation techniques. Dissertation Preparation for Health Professionals develops research skills and knowledge of research methodologies, evidence evaluation, project management, ethics, and data analysis techniques required for healthcare research. Students then complete a Major Project involving independent primary or secondary research under academic supervision. The Preliminary Clinical Evaluation and Enhancing Practice module strengthens skills in evaluating radiographic images of the chest, abdomen, and skeletal system for abnormalities. Specialist Radiographic Imaging introduces modern imaging technologies such as computed tomography and ultrasound while exploring their scientific principles, safety considerations, and role in patient care, preparing graduates for careers in contemporary diagnostic imaging services.
