COURSE CURRICULUM

This postgraduate programme in crime investigation and criminology provides students with advanced knowledge of criminal investigation processes, legal frameworks and research methods while developing the analytical and professional skills required for careers in policing, criminal justice and related sectors. The Dissertation module enables students to develop expertise in research and evaluation by integrating, synthesising and critically analysing criminological theories, concepts and methodologies to produce an independent research project on a criminological topic of their choice. Investigation of Organised Crime focuses on the nature, structure and investigation of organised criminal activity by drawing upon academic research and specialist expertise in organised crime investigations. Students critically evaluate investigative practices used by police services in the United Kingdom and internationally while examining different governmental responses to organised crime across various jurisdictions. Legal Aspects of Investigating Crime develops understanding of the sources of English law and the structure of the English legal system while exploring the legal framework that supports the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences. Students examine how legislation and legal principles influence investigative procedures and criminal justice processes. Social Research Methods provides advanced knowledge of research design, methodology and data analysis while exploring the philosophical foundations that underpin social research. Students critically evaluate the relationship between theory, research methods and data while developing practical skills in designing, conducting and analysing research projects. The module also emphasises ethical considerations and practical challenges associated with research in real-world settings. The Practice of Major Crime Investigation, which is delivered online, examines the management, supervision and coordination of major crime investigations while introducing nationally recognised investigative strategies and best practices used within policing. Students explore ethical and legislative requirements that guide criminal investigations and develop an understanding of how complex investigations are managed effectively and efficiently. Together, these modules provide graduates with advanced investigative knowledge, legal understanding, research expertise and critical thinking skills that support careers in law enforcement, intelligence, criminology, public policy and academic research.
