COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Civil and Structural Engineering programme provides advanced technical knowledge and professional skills in structural, geotechnical, environmental and project engineering disciplines. The course is professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, supporting graduates towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and improving employment opportunities within the engineering sector. Students study Advanced Geotechnics, where they develop expertise in soil mechanics, ground investigation and geotechnical design techniques while examining the environmental impacts of engineering projects. Advanced Structural Analysis with Dynamics focuses on static and dynamic structural behaviour, enabling students to analyse and solve complex engineering problems using modern analytical methods. Advanced Structural Design builds on this knowledge by developing advanced design capabilities for real-world structures and engineering systems. The Advanced Project Planning and Visualisation module introduces traditional and modern project management techniques, including multi-constraint scheduling and advanced 4D visualisation technologies used in contemporary construction projects. Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes develops understanding of water engineering, treatment technologies and sustainability challenges within the water-energy sector. The Sustainability module examines climate change mitigation, environmental impact assessment and sustainable engineering practices that are increasingly important across the civil engineering industry. Students also complete an Engineering Research Project where they investigate a real-world sustainability or clean energy challenge, applying advanced research methods and technical analysis to create industry-relevant solutions. Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, seminars and case studies drawn from research and industry practice, while assessment methods include technical reports, examinations, project work and research presentations, ensuring graduates are prepared for senior engineering roles and professional advancement.
