The MSc Chemical Engineering course offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop advanced technical expertise and professional skills required by the modern chemical process industries. The Advanced Chemical Engineering Design module introduces industrial modelling and simulation software used for designing complex chemical engineering processes and complete chemical plants while also covering business, commercial and regulatory aspects of process development. Advanced Fluid Dynamics develops understanding of computational fluid dynamics, multiphase flow, thermodynamics and fluid behaviour, providing skills in analysing and modelling complex flow systems using industry-standard CFD tools. The Electrochemical Principles module focuses on electrochemical systems and their applications in electrolysis, batteries and fuel cells, while exploring the kinetics, thermodynamics, mass transfer and diffusion processes that underpin these technologies. Through the Engineering Research Project, students undertake an independent investigation into a real-world sustainability or clean energy challenge, applying advanced research methods and critical analysis to develop industry-relevant solutions. Process Improvement and Optimisation develops expertise in improving efficiency, productivity and sustainability in chemical manufacturing through optimisation techniques, advanced reactors, catalyst selection and process redesign strategies. The Quality, Health, Safety and Environment module provides a strong understanding of quality management systems, process safety, hazard identification, risk assessment, safety auditing and environmental compliance, particularly within oil, gas and process industries. Students also examine occupational health, sustainability and environmental impact assessment alongside the implementation of Total Quality Management systems. Sustainability in Chemical Engineering focuses on environmental management systems, life cycle assessment, environmental impact assessment, renewable energy technologies and clean engineering solutions to address global environmental challenges. Together, these modules provide graduates with the technical, analytical and managerial skills required for careers in chemical processing, energy, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing industries, while also supporting progression towards professional engineering accreditation and leadership roles within the sector.
