COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc Biotechnology programme is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical skills required for careers in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and life sciences industries. The course develops a comprehensive understanding of biosciences, focusing on biochemistry, biological manufacturing principles, laboratory techniques, and the industrial production of biological products. Students explore advanced bioprocessing methods, including both upstream and downstream processes involved in the development and purification of biologics and cell-based therapies. The Advanced Upstream Bioprocessing module focuses on developing efficient production processes, gene therapy concepts, vector systems, and experimental design, while Advanced Downstream Bioprocessing examines purification strategies such as filtration, chromatography, and separation technologies used in commercial biotechnology. The programme also covers biopharmaceutical development, from initial concept and target selection through to product manufacturing, including monoclonal antibodies, cell lines, and gene delivery systems. Students gain knowledge of fermentation technology and its applications in producing valuable biological products, from food-related processes to advanced therapeutics. Through modules in Analytical Techniques, Genomics and Bioinformatics, students develop expertise in modern scientific methods, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy, next-generation sequencing, genome editing, and computational analysis. The Life Science Research Project provides an opportunity to undertake independent research within specialist areas such as microbiology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, structural biology, bioengineering, and biotechnology. Delivered at Teesside University’s Middlesbrough campus within the advanced Bios facility, the course provides access to high-quality laboratories and innovative research infrastructure. Students engage with cutting-edge research areas including genomic and proteomic analysis, biomarker discovery, diagnostic development, biopharmaceutical research, protein studies, and advanced cellular imaging techniques. The programme prepares graduates for professional roles in biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical industries, research organisations, healthcare laboratories, and academic research, while also providing a strong foundation for further study towards a PhD. Through a combination of theoretical learning, practical laboratory experience, and research-based training, students develop the technical expertise, analytical abilities, and innovative mindset needed to contribute to the rapidly evolving global biotechnology sector.
