The MSc Bioinformatics programme provides advanced training in computational biology, data science, and modern life science technologies, equipping students with the expertise required to analyse and interpret large biological datasets in research, healthcare, and industry environments. The Bioinformatics Analysis Techniques and Tools module develops core computational and analytical skills through the application of advanced bioinformatics methods to high-throughput datasets generated from microarray studies, next-generation sequencing, and functional genomics research. Data Analytics strengthens statistical knowledge and practical data analysis skills, introducing students to analytical pipelines, data visualisation techniques, and software packages such as SPSS for interpreting complex biological information. The Genomic Technologies module explores cutting-edge developments including next-generation sequencing platforms, genome editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas systems, pharmacogenomics, personalised medicine, and the ethical issues associated with modern genomic science. Students gain extensive programming expertise through dedicated modules in Python for Bioinformatics and R for Bioinformatics, learning coding principles, statistical computing, graphical data presentation, and the use of professional development environments including JupyterLab, Spyder, RStudio, and R Markdown to produce high-quality analyses and scientific reports. The Proteomic Technologies module focuses on advanced omics approaches including proteomics, phosphoproteomics, metabolomics, mass spectrometry, and translational biology, providing insight into disease mechanisms and therapeutic development. A major component of the programme is the Life Science Research Project, where students undertake an independent, hypothesis-driven investigation within an active research team using advanced laboratory, computational, and database methodologies supported by the state-of-the-art facilities at the National Horizons Centre. Through extensive practical training, independent research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, graduates develop the advanced technical, analytical, and research skills required for careers in bioinformatics, genomics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare research, and doctoral study.
