COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Bioinformatics with Advanced Practice programme combines advanced computational biology education with valuable professional experience, preparing graduates for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare research, genomics, and data science. A key feature of the programme is the Advanced Practice in Health and Life Sciences module, completed over a 12-week period and requiring at least 400 hours of professional activity. Students can undertake research, development, employer-led, virtual, or vocational internships aligned with their career goals and academic interests, gaining practical experience while enhancing employability and professional skills through supervision from academic staff and workplace mentors. The Bioinformatics Analysis Techniques and Tools module develops advanced computational and problem-solving abilities by applying modern bioinformatics methods to high-throughput datasets including microarray, next-generation sequencing, and functional genomics studies. Data Analytics provides a strong foundation in statistical methods and biological data interpretation using software packages such as SPSS to support data visualisation and analysis. Genomic Technologies explores cutting-edge developments including next-generation sequencing platforms, genome editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas systems, pharmacogenomics, personalised medicine, and the ethical issues surrounding these rapidly advancing fields. Students also study Proteomic Technologies, gaining expertise in proteomics, phosphoproteomics, metabolomics, mass spectrometry, and translational biology. Dedicated modules in Python for Bioinformatics and R for Bioinformatics develop programming, scripting, statistical computing, and data visualisation skills using professional development environments such as JupyterLab and RStudio. The programme culminates in a substantial Life Science Research Project undertaken within an active research team, where students use advanced laboratory, database, and computational methodologies to investigate complex biological questions using state-of-the-art facilities at the National Horizons Centre. Together, these modules provide graduates with advanced research expertise, technical competence, and industry experience required for leadership roles within the rapidly expanding bioinformatics and life sciences sectors.
