COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied Cyber Security programme provides advanced knowledge and practical skills required to protect organisations against modern cyber threats and digital risks. The course includes Cyber Security and Network Foundations, where students develop an understanding of computer networks, mobile connectivity, network design principles, and cybersecurity fundamentals. Network and Systems Security builds expertise in cryptography, authentication protocols, digital signatures, access control, penetration testing, intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and protection against cyber attacks. In Cyber Risk and Vulnerability Management, students learn how to identify, assess, and manage cybersecurity risks using industry-standard tools, frameworks, and techniques to protect organisational assets and information systems. The Hacking the Human module focuses on social engineering and human-centred cyber threats, exploring how attackers exploit human behaviour and how organisations can strengthen awareness and resilience against these risks. IT Ethics and Law examines important legal and ethical considerations including intellectual property rights, cybercrime legislation, privacy regulations, contracts, liability, and data protection laws relevant to the technology industry. Mobile Systems and Cyber Security develops knowledge of modern mobile technologies, communication systems, hardware, networking technologies, mobile security, and data compression methods used in smartphones, tablets, and connected devices. The programme concludes with the Computing Masters Project, where students undertake a substantial independent research or industry-focused project to solve a real-world cybersecurity challenge through the development of software, security tools, systems, or research outputs. Throughout the course, students gain advanced analytical, technical, research, and professional skills that prepare them for leadership roles within the cybersecurity industry.
