COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biomedical Science programme provides advanced scientific knowledge and practical research skills designed to prepare graduates for careers in healthcare, biomedical research, pharmaceutical industries, diagnostic laboratories, and further academic study. The Advanced Biological Aspects of Diseases module explores the physiological mechanisms underlying major diseases and examines emerging treatments and innovations in areas such as depression, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, cancer biology, and parasitic infections, while strengthening students’ critical analysis, communication, and research evaluation skills through scientific discussions and literature reviews. Analytical Techniques develops expertise in modern laboratory methods including chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, alongside advanced data interpretation and statistical analysis skills essential for contemporary life science research. Clinical Biochemistry and Diagnostic Techniques focuses on the analysis of biological samples for disease diagnosis, patient monitoring, and treatment evaluation, providing an in-depth understanding of biochemical processes and modern diagnostic technologies used in clinical settings. The Genomics and Bioinformatics module introduces cutting-edge technologies such as next-generation sequencing, genome editing, pharmacogenomics, and personalised medicine while examining their applications in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment together with associated ethical considerations. Students complete a substantial Life Science Research Project, conducting independent hypothesis-driven research under academic supervision in specialist fields including microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, protein science, fermentation, and bioengineering. Specialist modules such as Pathobiology of Infectious Diseases provide detailed knowledge of human pathogens, host-pathogen interactions, immunology, pathogen evolution, and advanced bioinformatics techniques, while The Pathobiology of Neurological Diseases examines the molecular and cellular basis of disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and stroke, together with their treatment strategies. Collectively, the programme equips graduates with advanced laboratory expertise, research competence, analytical skills, and specialist biomedical knowledge required for careers in clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology industries, healthcare organisations, and doctoral research programmes.
