COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical experience in psychological research, preparing them for careers in academia, professional research, and further doctoral study. The programme combines qualitative and quantitative research training with the development of professional research skills, enabling students to become confident and independent researchers. Through the study of qualitative methods, students explore major frameworks used to investigate social and psychological phenomena and learn how to collect rich and meaningful data using interviews, observations, and other elicitation techniques. The programme also develops strong quantitative research skills by introducing students to both experimental and non-experimental approaches, including laboratory-based studies and survey research. Students gain experience in analysing data using a variety of statistical techniques and specialist software, allowing them to answer complex research questions with accuracy and confidence. A major component of the course is the MRes thesis, where students design, conduct, and complete an independent research project within their chosen area of psychology. They produce a detailed written thesis following academic research standards and later discuss their project, methods, and findings during a viva voce examination. The programme also places significant emphasis on professional research skills, guiding students through the complete research process from generating ideas and planning projects to preparing findings for publication and dissemination to wider audiences. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, analytical abilities, communication skills, and ethical research practices. By the end of the programme, graduates possess the expertise and practical experience required for independent research work and are well prepared for PhD study or careers in universities, healthcare organisations, research institutes, government agencies, and other sectors that value advanced research capabilities.
