The MSc Biomedical Science with Advanced Practice programme provides advanced knowledge, research expertise, and practical skills required for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology, and further academic study. The Advanced Biological Aspects of Diseases module explores innovative research into the physiological mechanisms of disease and emerging therapeutic approaches, covering areas such as depression, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, cancer biology, and parasitic infections. Students develop essential transferable skills in scientific research, critical evaluation, communication, and data interpretation through analysis of primary research articles, presentations, discussions, and scientific reviews. The Analytical Techniques module introduces advanced laboratory methods used in modern life science research, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy, and genomic techniques. Students develop practical skills in sample preparation, instrumentation, data handling, statistical analysis, and the interpretation of scientific results, supporting research in areas such as proteomics, metabolomics, and genomics. The Genomics and Bioinformatics module provides an in-depth understanding of advanced genomic technologies, proteomic approaches, computational analysis, next-generation sequencing, genome editing, pharmacogenomics, personalised medicine, and ethical considerations within modern biomedical science. Students complete a Life Science Research Project where they undertake an independent, hypothesis-driven investigation within a research-active environment, applying specialist laboratory and analytical techniques across areas including medical microbiology, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology, protein biochemistry, structural biology, fermentation, and bioengineering. The Advanced Life Science Research Project builds on previous research experience, allowing students to further develop their chosen area of expertise through deeper investigation, advanced experimental design, and data analysis while working as part of a research team. Together, these modules provide graduates with advanced scientific understanding, laboratory expertise, research capability, and professional skills needed to contribute to developments in biomedical science and pursue careers in research, industry, healthcare laboratories, or doctoral-level study.
