COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Health programme provides a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the knowledge, research abilities and leadership skills required to address modern public health challenges. During the first year, students study Data Analysis Methods, which develops understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research approaches used in public health investigations, covering everything from basic data exploration to advanced multivariable analysis techniques. The Developing Research Projects module prepares students to design, manage and evaluate research, audit and service improvement projects while introducing research governance and ethical approval procedures through the completion of a detailed research proposal. Epidemiology introduces the principles of studying health and disease patterns within populations, examining research methodologies, disease measurement, study design, bias, confounding and the critical evaluation of epidemiological evidence. International Public Health focuses on global health challenges and inequalities, international healthcare systems, health protection, disease prevention, environmental health, communication, globalisation and health economics, helping students understand public health from a worldwide perspective. Leadership and Management in Public Health develops leadership capabilities and strategic thinking by exploring leadership styles, healthcare resource allocation, ethical decision making, public health law, organisational culture and the evaluation of public health interventions. Public Health in Context provides students with a broad understanding of the social, political and professional environment in which public health operates and supports those already working in or aspiring to enter the sector. During the second year, students complete a Dissertation, where they apply their research skills to investigate a public health issue using quantitative, qualitative or systematic review methodologies. Students also undertake a Public Health Internship through a vocational placement, research project within the university or an international study opportunity, allowing them to gain valuable practical experience and enhance their employability and professional development within the public health field.
