COURSE CURRICULUM
The Public Policy programme with Applied Practice combines academic study with professional experience to prepare students for careers in government, public administration, policy analysis and related sectors. A key feature of the programme is the Applied Practice module, which provides students with valuable real-world experience through an external internship or a university-based project undertaken alongside practising researchers. Supported by university careers advisors, students develop practical knowledge, professional skills and career aspirations while reflecting on their experiences through a portfolio assessment. Although this module does not contribute to the final degree classification, it significantly enhances employability and workplace readiness. Contemporary Issues in Public Administration, Politics and Policy enables students to investigate major political and policy challenges at local, national and international levels while undertaking an independent research project on a contemporary issue. Students design their own area of study, select suitable methodologies and assessment approaches, and complete reflective activities that strengthen research, time management and independent learning skills. The Dissertation module allows students to apply their research and communication abilities to a specialist topic through a substantial 15,000-word project or an equivalent knowledge exchange output such as policy recommendations, systematic reviews or research reports for public organisations. International Law, Politics and Society develops understanding of international law, global institutions and international relations while encouraging critical analysis of their effectiveness in maintaining international order and cooperation. Introduction to Public Administration and Policy examines public sector management, policy development and implementation through historical and contemporary case studies covering areas such as healthcare, welfare, local government and crime. Social Research Methods develops advanced understanding of research methodologies, data analysis and the philosophical foundations of social science research while highlighting ethical and practical considerations involved in conducting studies. Together, these modules equip graduates with strong analytical, leadership, communication and research capabilities, alongside practical experience that prepares them for professional roles in government departments, public-private partnerships, international organisations and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors.
